About the Event

DANTE ALIGHIERI SANTA CRUZ Winter 2024 FILM Series:

Majestic Landscapes and impetuous Passion

With the patronage of the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco

Our films this winter are recent releases showcasing Italy’s breathtaking natural landscapes, from the Alps to the majestic marble quarries of Carrara to Sicily’s beaches. These settings serve both as inspiration and challenge for the protagonists, each embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

The April Film is:  Sin [Il peccato - Il furore di Michelangelo]. Dir. Andrej Končalovskij. 2019 (120 min).

Trailer

Although widely considered a genius by his contemporaries in early 16th century Florence, Michelangelo Buonarroti is reduced to poverty and depleted by his struggle to finish the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When his commissioner and head of the Della Rovere nobility, Pope Julius II, dies, Michelangelo becomes obsessed with sourcing the finest marble from the quarries of Carrara to complete his tomb. The artist’s loyalty is tested when Leo X, of the rival Medici family, ascends to the papacy and charges him with a lucrative new commission - the facade of the San Lorenzo basilica. Forced to lie to maintain favor with both families, Michelangelo is progressively tormented by suspicion and hallucinations, leading him to ruthlessly examine his own moral and artistic failings. Featuring stunning landscapes of Tuscany and Florence, Sin is a gripping reflection on the agony and ecstasy of individual greatness, and the profound humanity behind a legend of the Renaissance.
